He handed me a deck of cards and told me to study them until I could read the backs.
After studying them for a couple weeks including using a magnafiying glass, I told Martin I saw squat.
He layed out a card on the table and traced his finger down one edge about 1 inch, and said "King."
The shade jumped off the card at me card like it was floresent. You could not see the "shade" unless you knew it was there.
Today shades have a different meaning. It takes contact lenses to see them.
