Geez - I coulda wrote that letter!

Most of his points are very true. I still remember that in the mid 1970's I went to the GM locomotive assembly facility in the Chicago area to check out some new production for the Milwaukee Road. It was shortly after lunch (about 1:00PM) and I asked why all of the employees were just sitting on top of the 3000 HP engines that they were assembling. Despite the fact that they didn't quit until 3:30 or 4:00 they were sitting around because they had already made the days required production. Since the minimum was done so were they! My boss also told me about the Chicago to Milwaukee passenger train run which is about 100 miles. That is about as far as you could go in an 8 or 10 hour day back when you had to stop and fill up with coal and water frequently. So it became the standard for a days pay. So the "milk run" was Milwaukee to Chicago and back. Only the highest senority engineers got that job and of course thay got paid 2 full days wages for doing it - every day! That was 35 years ago and apparently we still have not learned our lesson. When we do it is going to be painful.
