Chequers was already in existence, but had no message board. CompuServe and Prodigy had forums of sorts already, but you had to be a member to participate.
At the time, most of us were either CompuServe or Prodigy, some of us were both, but not many. Because of an email from Don Lueders, I visited a message board about blackjack. On my first visit there I realized that this thing was what the chip hobby needed so that everyone could talk together no matter which group they were with. I bought a copy of the software and installed it on my server.
It was several weeks or maybe a month or more before Neal and Marty added a message board to the Chequers site.
What Doug remembers is when Chequers became kind of a links page, with links to the other message boards and content creators around the web. You could indeed then go to Chequers and click a link to go to The Chip Board.
