Re: Obsolete VS. Limited Edition Chips.

I collect what I like.

I like the history and look of the obsoletes, they were simple, but well designed. They were equipment the casinos used and were not thought of as a profit item or marketing tool. When chips left the casino, some were taken as souvenirs, others just taken home to return on the next visit to the casino. Sometimes the casino closed, the people forgot they had the chip or they just wanted to keep it. The point is that the casinos did not make the chip to profit from it. When I pay a lot for a obsolete chip it is because I like the chip and I don't think there are many out there, so the price goes up. If some chips are found and the supply goes up, and the price goes down - so be it. I bought the chip because I like it, not to invest in it. I am a collector - not an investor.

Today's LE are a marketing tool, a souvenir item and a profit center item. Some of the chips never see a gaming table. They might as well sell them in the gift shop rather than the cage. Don't get me wrong, I still like and collect LE, but I don't go over the edge because I can't get one.

Let me finish this by stating: I like and enjoy (now there's a word you don't hear very much anymore) collecting chips, whether obsoletes or LEs. But when it gets too difficult, or too expensive, or just too many, I don't pick those chips up.

There are now three casinos I do not collect chips from. They are the Four Queens, Tropicana and now the Hard Rock.

But that's my opinion.

P.S.- I bought the Dunes chip pictured in an antique shop for $5.00, not bad <g>
