It is the duty of every American to vote and they should not take the defeatist attitude of saying well, my guy is going to lose anyway so I won't vote.

You make it sound like the two spots in contention, those of President and Vice President are the only ones you will find in the voting process.
There are hosts of candidates running for State and Local positions too.

I would bet that many of these same people that find excuses not to vote will be the same people that will complain later about the outcome.
I agree that the electoral system is a bit archaic but it is all we have.
