I never paid any attention to the size of the edge holes but I checked my books and the sheets I bought from a local coin shop are Cowen (oval punched) and they do turn more smoothly than the smaller round holes.

I've also found that the 3-ring binders that are sold as "D" ring binders are easier to flip also.
