As for all the fancy "stuff", they were all available & worn by all the swimmers in the pool, so everybody swimming had the same advantage. If you wanna claim he never would have broken any of the world records without the fancy "stuff", then I'd hear that argument. But that's kinda like saying Michael Phelps shouldn't be considered such a great swimmer because the pool was 3 meters deep instead of the usual 2, so that allowed for calmer waters, and he was able to win more than Spitz. Everybody was swimming in the same pool, and everybody was wearing the same suit. It was a fair competition, and he fairly won his 8 gold medals.
