The term is quite common because of the feel and

... clang when the chips drop on a table.

I've bought many ivory chips at flea markets being told they were Bakelite.

When I first started collecting poker chips I had no idea that those chips were clay composition; thought they were some type of plastic because they would break apart sounding like a piece of thin plastic if snapped in half... Then Robert Eisenstadt took the time to explain to me what they were.

The chips seen below are mother-of-pearl... Known as fine china/glass to some. grin
