The one re-occuring theme I see on the message board at http://www.cpaptalk.com/CPAP-Sleep-Apnea-Forum.html is that no one, not your Dr, not your sleep tester, no one, has as much interest in your treatment as you (this probably applies to all health care, come to think about it). The more you understand ALL of the options, learn from other people's experiences, educate youself and take control, the better the chances are for success.
The one plug I will give for an APAP machine (vs the standard CPAP) is that once conditions change (you gain/lose weight, original tritation wasn't spot on for the sleep conditions at home, etc) the APAP will adjust too. With the standard APAP:
- you don't know the pressure is wrong besides not feeling well rested (but was that because you drank too much caffeine? Stayed up too late?)
- you need to go in for another sleep study (titration) to get a new pressure (not sure about other areas, but a sleep study as the local County Hospital in Central NJ was $3000 for one night)
I agree that you can't take everything as gospel that you read on boards, but on the one I mentioned above you get people with sleep issues posting real-life questions and getting answers from people who have gone through the same things before. People will also post comparisons between products (machines & masks) from different manufacturers, something that you will NEVER get from a manufacturer's sponsored site.
Sleep well....
