The Royal Nevada opened on April 19, 1955. As part of the opening ceremonies a showgirl dropped the resort's front door key into the barrel of a cannon. The soldiers set off the cannon, blasting the key into the desert sky.

In 1959 the crown came off the building, and the Stardust took over the Royal Nevada. That's why it is in the Stardust book.

The evening before the resort opened, they hosted a dinner for soldiers from the Nevada Atomic Testing Grounds. Here's one of the menus (which is bigger than the scanner bed)...
