It's great to live in a black and white world, but the fact is, like you said, there is a sliding scale of evil. You're right - swiping a pencil from work should be treated the same way as stealing a copy machine. Lying to congress about a blow job from Monica Lewinski should be treated the same as denying the right of habeas corpus, conducting torture, lying about ignoring warnings about a major hurricane, and illegal wiretapping of US citizens.
