It's a fine point that they must have claimed, because all your website and all your photos and what you wrote about them is copyrighted when you publish it.
Since I do some work with photography I get into these questions often, and other than derivatives, which I still think is stealing... satire, education and news are legitimate free use.
I can't take a picture of you and sell it, unless I have a model release. However, I can take a picture of you and sell it for use in a news article, or educational publication, without your permission.
Most of the pictures I take at the races, I can't print and sell to anyone. Logos, trademarks, sanctioning bodies rights, track restrictions on photos taken on their property, drivers image, car designs... the list is enormous. But I can sell them to magazines and newspapers, around the world, without any problems or restrictions.
My guess is that these people stole your work and published it as "educational or news".
