When I first got my scanner I had problems getting good scans too. Then a friend told me to just scan from Adobe PhotoDeluxe (Home Edition 3.0) that came with my scanner. PhotoDeluxe lets you get photos from differnet sources such as the internet, files, cameras as well as the scanner. This works great for me and lets me save the files as different formats.
