Realistically, insurance or delivery confirmation is a benefit to the seller more than to the buyer. Seller has to get the merchandise to buyer and be able to show evidence if called for. IMO, it's best to use delivery confirmation, insurance, or Registered mail if the cost of losing it is above your pain level. Makes a difference if you know the buyer or have done business with him before. Also good to check how long he has been an eBay customer and what the wording of his feedback is... sellers can no longer leave feedback categorized as Negative, but can say what they think in the "Positive" feedback comments.

Also, you can include in your estimate of shipping cost, the additional amount to cover the mail service you use. No need to give the buyer the option of buying protection if seller is the one who benefits.

eBay's recent policy changes are in line with their desire to treat sellers as pros who should know what they are doing. We all know that's not always the case, and certainly wasn't in the early days of eBay when half or more of the sellers were collectors of some type. Doesn't mean you can't continue to use eBay to sell things, but just be aware that the burden of proof is now mainly on the seller if things go wrong.
