I guess what it all boils down to is the motivation for someone to come to a convention in the first place.
If your motivation is to have a great vacation, stay in a nice hotel, eat first class food and enjoy it like you would a trip to Europe, then I have to agree with you. The Riveria is NOT the place to be.
However if your motivation is to meet up with hundreds of your good friends, play poker in a tournament with only other chippers, Hear a fantastic historical Nevada speaker at the banquet, Attend seminars on collecting, Nevada, and chip history, trading chips with hundreds of other chippers on a daily basis, and being able to attend the largest Casino Chip and Gaming Memorabelia show in the world, then its a no brainer.
If your looking for just a vacation, there are lots of places I think I would rather go in the middle of summer than Las Vegas. However if your looking for chips, there is NO place in the world better than Vegas during the convention. Its all what your motivation is for wanting to go in the first palce.
For me, I could care less if the convention was held under a tent in a parking lot and all that was served was hot dogs and warm beer. Its the Chips and Friends that bring me to the convention and nothing that is said on this board will change that.
Take care and happy chipping,
Doug
