I talked to the ex-cage manager a few years ago who was at the casino when it was locked up. He said at that time the chips were numbers to track the wear, but after a few weeks they gave up. He said a lot of the chip went out the back door with the employees as they new they were not going to get paid when the casino was closed down. Hope this was of some help.
