Many have made good points, the most relevant being that there just isn't enough of a market to justify the time and expense. It may sound like it's all about the money, but I know it's a huge task. In time, hopefully the hobby will continue to grow, and the demand increase.
I'm going to speculate just for a minute. Just a few of the problems other then the time involved:
first off, I can't imagine trying to come up with realistic values for all of these chips. No way....no how. I disagree with many of the values in both TCR and Official Price Guide, but then again.... it's their collective best estimate, and they clearly state they are guides, not facts.
Lets just take a few pints. Myers, Knapp and Wheelen try to put out a total package, with about all the details you could want. It's a two volume set, and huge. It gets bigger and bigger each year, and after an additional five years of chips, a lot bigger. How much will the market bare for cost of this two volume set? The costs of shipping have also gone up. I would have to guess they would need charge close to 60.00 now to cover everything. The product is great.
I could go on making points, and the discussion could go on and on. The bottom line is we REALLY need a resource yesterday. Our situation is bad. It's bad for experienced collectors, bad for beginners, bad for dealers, and very bad for the hobby. I sure hope somebody is secretly working on one and we'll so have a surprise.
So very sad to think this is the fourth convention without a current priceguide.
Then we have James Campiglia and the Official Price guide. I know the publisher restricts how many pages he is allowed to have. He is faced with what does he cut. Tough spot to be in. He also has to have the books sold. Again, I don;t agree with everything, but he has done all he can to do as good a job as he can, and a world better then I could ever do.
I think all are falling short of thinking in the electronic age. Coin collectors have long had the luxury of having downloadable price guides, including updates. They do it as one time deals, or subscriptions and the price is very reasonable. This is a direction chip price guides need pursue. They can also be available in paper form as well....but the electronic form can not be ignored. The profit margin for the author is much greater as well.
