Cuban authorities will not stamp your passport if you ask them. They have a paper visa they put with your passport, which they collect when you leave. Where the dilemma comes in is when you come back to the US. The Imigration form asks what countries have you visited. If you list Cuba they will usually give you a little grief, not much else. I personally don't want to sign a Federal form without listing the countries I have visited in case I have to defend it in court.
Keep in mind it is not illegal to go to Cuba, the law just says you can't spend money in Cuba. If anyone wants to go I know an American tour operator who will make the arrangements. You fly out of Nassau. I have made three trips there to go fishing. It's a wonderful place to visit.
