I'm sorry I have forgotten what scanner/scanning software (not imaging software like PhotoDelux - I mean the actual program used to drive the scanner such as HP Precision Scan or Desk Scan) that you use.
Yet one thing that comes to mind is that some scanner software will perform a auto adjustment of the setting, Brightness & Contrast as well as the output type (Black and White, color, sharp color or True Color, etc). One possibility is that the scanning software "thinks" that the image is a color or 256 colors Vs millions of colors. Try scanning the Emprie Chip again, yet this time before the final scan (or return to PhotoDelux if you are using the HP Precision Scan software...), make sure that the output type is set to millions of colors (or True Colors).
