I know that matches can only burn if there is oxygen present. Even the cheesy ashtray in my car will quickly extinguish a cigarette if you simply close the plastic top.
Hence, I have no worries about storing my gazillion matchbooks in thick glass ornamental jars with metal screw on lids (Pier1 Imports carries HEAVY, thick-walled glass jars). I guess there is always a slim chance they could spontaneous combust, but the lack of fresh air should (I hope) extinguish them within a second or two.
...just don't tell my insurance agent!
