A relatively new branch of coin collecting is assembling a collection of each variety of package that the coin grading companies have produced. I believe the sample slabs with chips in them are valuable as part of the history of this industry and that's why you see strange prices for what would normally be a low value coin or chip.
Take a look at the site linked below which shows pictures of the various companies' slab designs that have been used.
Just as valid a collecting area as the cardboard boxes that chips are shipped in. Remember Howdy's multipage article in the Club Magazine a few issues back?
