NCR: Nevada Road Trip Report #2

My 1st post was made after I arrived in Ely a couple days ago. See

The Nevada Hotel in Ely is definitely the place to stay. The tablegames (only ones in Ely) are in the basement, and that opens at 5pm daily. Just a couple blackjack style games (min $3), and I don't remember any craps. Poker is only on Fri and Sat night, starting at 7pm. One table only, and it is $1-5 spread limit, or pot limit, depending on what the players want.

Arrived in Elko 2 says ago (nice drive from Ely!). City is larger than I thought it would be, several times the size of Ely, with all the requisite food fast food joints, strip malls, historical section, etc. People are nice, and seem to like Elko -- many Vegas/Reno natives have settled here. Scoped out the 5 casinos, including the 2 historical ones: Stockmens and Commercial. Commercial is only a slot joint, and Stockmens has table games but no poker. Of the remaining 3 'modern' casinos, only the Red Lion Casino has a poker room (room is nonsmoking). Games don't usually get going until the daily 6:30pm tourney ($35 buyin w addl rebuy/add on), and then the typical $1/$2 NLHE cash game afterwards. They will spread more tables and other games (they have about 5 tables), but I didn't see it happen during my stay. They try to get a morning Tourney going at 10, but they only had sufficient interest 1 day out of 3 while I was there. I liked the Red Lion enought to stay an extra day, swapping it for my planned overnight in Winnemucca. The card players said that staying in Winnemucca was a BAD idea (I will swing through there mid-day today). Red Lion rooms are nice -- try to get the poker rate of $45, or rooms may run you twice that. Food is good ($11 buffet), and the drinks are quick and tasty.

Note to match collectors: It is a rare joint these days that has nice matches. Most only have white cover generics...

Checking out now, and will let you know what I find out about Winnemucca and any other place I stop on the way to Reno.

All for now....
