I knew the day was coming, I’m BUSTED! I don’t have one but I thought, no problem I will just email a couple of friends and get a nice image of one to post for Don. Easier said than done! I have been looking for over a week now, and nothing. I got a zillion ‘National Notes’ but NONE from Carrollton, MO. Since I can’t do it, I will do the next best thing, tell everyone about them and show examples.
Before the United States went to the Federal Reserve System in 1913, money was issued by thousands of local banks, the last being issued in 1935. On the left side of the note was the issuing bank with the city. Note: Don’t be misled by the bank name being “The Federal Reserve Bank of…” as they were not affiliated or part of the Federal Reserve System. Many of the issuing banks were “The National Bank of…” or many other names. As these notes were phased out many people stuck back a couple from their home towns, major cities, or places of interest as future keepsakes.
I will show the face of two old National Notes in my collection that were passed on to me a long time ago (pardon the condition). You can see where it would be novel to have a note from your own town. These notes vary in value so much I cannot even give a range on them. Things that affect the value are 1) Where from because number that ever issued 2) Denomination 3) Condition 4) Age 5) Popularity of the place they were issued, putting more demand on certain towns. ENJOY!! Don, your request must be APPROVED in the future! (Just Kidding) Don's requested notes would be just like these except would have been issued from Carrollton, MO (his hometown).
