Having a total rewards card (even a diamond)does not alleviate you of the deposit hold. They don't actually take the money, they just block the amount on your card. Almost all hotels in the world do it, they just don't mention it to you. The larger than room rate amount is because you can charge to your room (so in effect you are charging to your card).
