In the immediate hours after the quake, my brother who lived in the San Francisco/Oakland area came down right away and brought a little Honda generator. The quake hit very early in the morning and he arrived before it got dark on that first day. The little generator powered two things for the next several days...

The refrigerator and a TV. Sure is surprising how a TV can double as a light source!
