Did the maker really punch a hole in each gold edge insert and put a ball of white clay in it before molding the chip? I believe this is the only chip I've seen that does this. Since much of the manufacture was by hand in those days, maybe nobody worried about the extra minutes to assemble; also, the split insert chips were possibly just as time consuming to set up in the press.
Or maybe it was cancelled 4 times and someone filled the holes with putty? [g]
