If you are concerned about others monitoring your bid items, you can always use the "Watching" feature on your myEbay page. Track up to 20 items, then place a bid, if you choose, at the closing minutes of the auction.

On most items, I just go ahead and bid when I first see it, but I have found the "Watching" feature to be handy for some situations.
