When you send an email a copy is usually placed in your "Sent" folder so you normally do not need to send it to yourself. I suppose you get some assurance that it actually got processed by the ISP's server if you send it to yourself. For testing purposes I have multiple email accounts - like the hotmail account - that I use to send a mail to my ISP mail account.
