the proof of the pudding is whether or not it works. Use it until it no longer sends or receives, or the quality somehow deteriorates. Also, my technical side tells me that "static" on the line is more likely a function of the telephone service before the telephone instrument. (Perhaps Archie can weigh in on that.)
