My understanding is there are quite a few resorts in Cuba that european, and Canadian travelers go to as a Caribbean vacation location. Maybe someday the US trade embargo will be lifted. I hope it's in my lifetime. I know it won't be during Fidel Castro's lifetime.

Spraking of sad living conditions....take a visit to the west side of the island of Espanola. East side (Dominican Republic) is mixed, but the west side (Haiti) is, for lack of a better word; squaller! I'm sure you experienced plenty of the same in Cuba.
