When I was a kid, I had a real mutt named Ranger (about 20 pounds), who went everywhere with me. After I went away to college, he was walkingto the store with my Mom and two younger sisters one day when a large boxer ran toward them, barking and acting as though he were going to attack. Though 12 years old and in frail health, Ranger immediately charged to fend the boxer off. During the enusing fight, the boxer bit Ranger in the hindquarters, severing his spinal column. Mom called me that night to say they had to put him down. I cried for hours. ----- jim o\-S
