Well, let's see. I started in this silly hobby about eleven years ago. I first started out collecting only dice from the places that I had played. After a half dozen trips to ALL the casinos in Nevada it was harder and harder to get more dice and not wanting to come home empty handed I began to pick up chhips and tokens, ashtrays and matches.
Colorado restarted gaming a few years ago and I felt that I had to have those chips. I even dabbled in selling for a while but soon tired of that grind. With dice becoming harder for me to come by I threw a lot of money at Nevada chips, even selling off all the Colorado stuff to buy Nevada chips.
After my collection grew to about 2,000 chips I was not able to keep to my commitment to myself that I wanted to display it all. For the last two years I have been selling off chips and buying other casino collectibles, dinnerware, photos, slot banks, etc. Basically now, my collection is more of advertising than of any one type of collectible.
The goal at this point is to have something from everyplace that ever had gambling in Nevada. It's all in the History, to have something that was important to someone 30,40,50 years ago, to hold it in my hand and think that that person was just like I am today.
What I really get a kick out of is that I have things in my collection that others who have been doing this for a lot longer have never seen. And they have things that I will never see, but who knows what you'll stumble onto tomorrow.
