eBay? We had online auctions before anyone heard of eBay, and they weren't all time-limited, i.e., post your bids and hope they held up. We had live auctions in the chat room, fun to watch even if you weren't bidding!

Archie didn't think he needed a home computer (refused to buy one for quite a while) but he did have friends who would read the posts made in that forum to him over the phone. Then, he'd relay his opinions/responses to those friends to post on his behalf. Archie has since bought a home computer or two.
