I remember when auctions actually seemed to work like that. In my experience, the advent of automatic sniper programs ended that model for most auctions, except, perhaps, some very low level stuff. I don't see why ebay should be stuck in the fictional belief that their auctions actually run that way.
For sellers who don't like additional bids on their auctions (I'm not sure why Mark is against this), just set your auctions to end in the middle of the night. Most bidders will have set snipe programs or entered their maximum bid before the end of the auction, and your auction should only last an additional 15 minutes or so. If not, the bidding wars would probably end, for the most part, before you wake up the next morning.
