v
1. offer advice: to offer advice to somebody
We were advised to leave.
2. recommend: to suggest or recommend a course of action to somebody
3. inform: to tell somebody about something
4. vi seek advice: to seek advice or information
[14th century. Via Old French aviser , from avis “opinion.” Ultimately from Latin ad (meum) visum (see advice).]
advise = “inform”:
The use of the verb advise to mean “inform” is widely regarded as commercial jargon and is best avoided in general usage: Please advise us of [better: let us know] your new address. I will advise them [better: inform them] of the new time of the meeting.
