I would agree that there should be two catalog numbers based on the long cane/ short cane mold differences.

Remember on the hot stamping process there are two adjustable variables:

Temperature of the die
Pressure on the chip

High-tempertures and high pressure will cause the die to penetrate the chip further and the devices in the design appear larger. My opinion on the two scans is that they were made with the same die with different chip penetrations.

Many "gold" chips are really made with a metallic power mixed in with the clay. This is most certainly not actually gold, but usually a bronze dust. This oxidizes with time and the color will change. I suspect that's what happened with the chips shown, although it's hard to tell without actual examination.
