Athletes make way too much money, relative to the salaries of much more important professions like teachers, firefighters, law enforcement, military, and medical workers, to name a few. If we didn't have athletes, we would survive, but without any of these people, we would have a much harder time.
I understand the money athletes make comes from the fans who are gladly spending it on them, but somehow, I think each venue owes a certain percentage of 'dues' back to the local community to support the same fans who made them rich. A lot of basketball players do charity events and hang out with school kids and stuff which is good, but it doesn't pay the bills.
Besides, how many millions of $$$ does it take to score a touchdown, sink a 3-pointer, or serve an ace? Kids do it all the time at the playground for free.
I guess if I made it to the pro level in any sport, I might feel different!
