I think Illinois law provides that any bank account with five years of inactivity is turned over to the Illinois Teachers Retirement Fund.

As if this isn't already an assinine ripoff, the teachers are lobbying to have the time reduced to three years.

Of course, they are required to notify you by mail before they steal your money, but I heard a case a few years ago of an Illinois woman who moved to AL, or TN, with no forwarding address.

When she came back for her money 5+ years later, it was gone. $40K ripped off.
