I did the play in HS (a Catholic HS-and I still practice the faith, hmmm). I happen to like it, and I confess to having watched a couple other ALW plays as well. I am not as a rule a musicals fan (there are exceptions), but like Drama. Fortunately there is a lot out there for everyone.
JCS was my first, they wanted Herod to come across as a bad guy, so they tried to have this kid sing badly, it sounded like he was tring to sing badly. I sound like crap, and everyone knew it. Besides I could pull off pompous and appear to believe my singing was good. I liked the fact that I was surounded by girls in bikinis (I did say Catholic SChool?). I was just happy I remembered all the words.
As Big Julie, I was told to just mouth along with the others . I was believable as a gambler (wonder why). I was surprised at how many HS students didn't get the context of the scenes involving gambling. I got the part when I was asked to do the scene where I insist we play with my dice. The guy who was directing it started to explain the dice were not real, I said they were, and even brought out my own pair.
