I've had success keeping nasty critters out of my systems by using Spybot and Spyware Blaster. Both are available free - do a Google, but you'll have to manually upgrade them to keep them current. I run both a couple of times a week; upgrade from their server, then scan my computer. I also use a-squared (free too)...
