On my last vistit I was able to come up with illegal club chips from the Belvedere Club, Plantation Club, Southern Club, Tower Club, Vabors and White Front Club.
On this trip I was looking more for the history end of the various Hot Springs Clubs of the 50's and early 60's.
I had a wonderful conversation with the grandson of the man who owned the building that housed the Vapors Club. (He is close to 60).
As a young child he would go with his Grandfather to collect the rent. He described the building in detail. He made it clear that his Grandfather was not a part of the gambling but just rented the building to the people who ran the operation.
He stated that none of the local folks had any problem with the gambling operations but that "outside folks" forced the operations to cease in the 1960's.
He said that when the "Gamblers" left the buidling they left a bunch of stuff behind. When I ask him about the "Stuff" he said chips, dealers shoes, roulette wheels, slot machines "You know just stuff".
We exchanged email address and he said he would look to see if he still had any "Stuff" left laying around someplace. He said he would check with his brothers and sisters because he thought they had some "Stuff" too.
Just another fun day on the road.
