With excellent scanners available for $100-150, it's probably not worth the time and effort to repair your HP scanner, Ralph. I have two of the HP's in my collection of dead PC peripherals. They were good while they lasted!

I recommend the EPSON Perfection 1670. I've had mine for a year or so. There may be a later model now on the market, but it see the 1670 still for sale on Amazon for about $110. Connects to the USB port and has good scanning software.
