Many Arrested In Miami Beach Raid
MIAMI, April 6---(AP)----- Thirty one persons, including a former Dade County school official, and seven women were arrested and two truck loads of gambling paraphernalia were seized when deputy sheriffs raided a Miami Beach club this afternoon.
Deputies estimated that many escaped by jumping from the second story windows. One woman who leaped was caught in an awning on the first floor and was the object of merriment for the crowd of a thousand spectators attracted by the raid. Fellow fugitives released her.
The gambling place was packed with players and several games were in progress when the deputies arrived word that the “law” had arrived spread rapidly and a turmoil resulted. Exited women ran from room to room in a vain attempt to find an escape.
A man giving his name as Rudy Leavitt was arrested for operating the establishment and gave bond of $1,500. The others arrested were released on bond of $100 each. Many of the suspects are believed to have given fictitious names when booked
