Back in the 70's, I used to buy silver zinc torpedo and aircraft batteries as military surplus and recover the silver. Never made much at it because the refiners were not good enough to get all the silver out... much went up the smokestack and was spread over the neighborhood. However, I did sell the stainless steel cases to a scrap merchant. He never had any problem with them other than to check that they were non-magnetic.
