Photoshop defaults to a proprietary image format, I believe it's something like .psp. That saves some stuff that they use if you want to edit the image later. I haven't checked, but it probably does result in a larger file size.

You don't want this extension anyway as nobody else can read it. Just make sure you save all your images in the .jpg or .gif formats and there should be no difference in file size.
