Have you tried contacting advertising companies to see what happens to the old displays?

Here's a link to Clear Channel Taxi Media which has some of the trunk displays you mention. I'm sure Clear Channel bought out some other company that was making them back in the 70's, like they've bought up almost every major radio station in the country.
