Don; You were right on the money with your response to Jack. I didn't take your post to be argumentive at all, but to be informative. I know personally that many of these silver tokens were melted well after the 1970's. Coin dealers who couldn't sell these tokens in their shops for $10, $15, $20 each as the price of silver escalated, eagerly sent them to the melting pots when the price of silver approached $50 per ounce in 1980. Who knows how many of them are around today is anybody's guess. Records were not kept jof what was melted during this tremendous silver and gold rush over 20 years ago.
I and many other readers of this bb will remember vividly, people waiting in line for coin shops around the country to open in the mornings. They brought in tons of old jewelry, watches, rings, silverware that had been in the family for generations, coins, medals, tokens..... virtually anything that was stamped .999 fine silver, sterling silver, 14k up to 24k gold. The price of gold was well over $800 per ounce and predictions of it going to $1,000 were rampant.
Of course, it all came crashing down like everything else that goes up so rapidly, and the tycoon Hunt Brothers of Texas took a financial beating in their failed quest to corner the silver market.
Anybody care to guess what the price of silver is today????
