Union Pacific Railroad's historic steam locomotive, No. 844, begins a 35-day, 10-state tour this week to celebrate the railroad’s history and heritage.

The 3,800-mile South Central States Heritage Express Tour begins April 27 when No. 844 leaves Cheyenne, Wyo., and travels to Denver, Colo.

The schedule through May 2 is as follows:

Thursday, April 27 -- Cheyenne, Wyo., to Denver, Colo.
Friday, April 28 -- Denver, Colo., to Sharon Springs, Kan.
Saturday, April 29 -- Sharon Springs, Kan., to Salina, Kan.
Sunday, April 30 -- layover and display, Salina, Kan. (behind UP depot, 400 N. 13th St.), 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Monday, May 1 -- Salina, Kan., to Herington, Kan.
Tuesday, May 2 -- layover and display, Herington, Kan. (8th St. crossing), 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Wednesday, May 3 -- Herington, Kan., to Pratt, Kan.
A Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) transmitter was installed on one of the rail cars that travels with No. 844. and it has been integrated with a map on the Steam Operations section of UP’s Web site. Web site visitors will be able to access route maps, with varying amounts of detail, that are updated every five minutes showing No. 844’s location.

The locomotive will continue its tour with overnight stops and will be on display in:

Guymon and Claremore, Okla.;
Alamagordo, N.M.;
Dalhart, El Paso, Alpine, Del Rio, San Antonio, Austin, Palestine and Marshall, Texas;
Kansas City, Mo.;
North Little Rock and Russellville, Ark; and
Fairbury and North Platte, Neb., before arriving back to its home base in Cheyenne on June 1.
