Here it comes, gas prices are going up and everyone blames the US oil companies. We are price "takers", not makers. In the 70s, US oil companies made alot of money, in the 80s, alot of them went bankrupt. The 90s were tough, but the deregularion of natural gas helped while oil prices were still low. Now, prices are high again and we blame the oil companies. The two things which drive prices the greatest are supply and demand. Supply is regulated mostly by OPEC, not the US companies (although the US government does its share to keep supplies down by tying the hands of the refiners). Demand is regulated by YOU. The US consumer wants it, so the price goes higher.
I suppose you would feel better if it was the energy industry losing jobs instead of some of these other industries. Remember that the oil industry isn't filled with JR Ewing types sitting around smoking cigars and holding elaborate balls. They are owned and worked in by everyday, hard working individuals like secretaries, accountants and engineers. They have families who depend on them.
Next time there is a hard freeze in Florida I'll be sure to write a harsh message about the corrupt and greedy farm industry for the rising price of oranges.
