one thing you can try, which I do, is have 2 paypal accounts. I link one to my auctions (usually the one that takes credit cards which, unfortunately, attracts fees). However I also have a cash-only paypal and ask that people only use that one for cash transactions. Most people are happy to use the cash account for those payments which saves costs.
I would of course like an alternative, but as a seller outside the USA, there is no real alternative other than cash which some people, understandably, don't like to send in the mail - many alternatives have been mentioned, but ultimately paypal is used by a large number of Ebayers and to exclude them can possibly cost you those higher bids.
As always, if anyone knows of a US bank that will offer me a no-charges checking account then I will open one and accept checks, and just use cash to either pay for auctions or keep for when I vacation in the US. Please let me know if any US banks offer that kind of account to non-residents.
At the end of the day I decided to accept paypal in the hope of not turning away some bidders. There's no way of telling which is the best option, but at least the 2 paypal option allows you not to have to pay charges on all paypal transactions.

Jason
